Surgical cotton, absorbent cotton and cotton wool are three names for the same material: raw cotton that has been cleaned, de-fatted, bleached and carded until it absorbs water rather than repelling it. In India the grade that hospitals and chemists buy is written to the Indian Pharmacopoeia and marked I.P. on the pack.
Belsara Cotton manufactures absorbent cotton wool I.P. at GIDA, Gorakhpur and packs it under its own brand. The cotton goes out in two formats, roll and Zig Zag, in seven pack sizes.
The two formats
A roll pack is one continuous length of cotton wool wound on itself. You cut or tear what you need. It is the format most chemist shops, clinics and households know, and it is the one to order when the cotton will be used in varying amounts.
A Zig Zag pack is folded like a concertina between layers of paper. A measured length pulls away cleanly without cutting, which is quicker on a dressing trolley and wastes less. Hospitals and dressing rooms tend to prefer it.
Both are the same Absorbent Cotton Wool I.P. The difference is only in how the cotton is folded and how you take it off the pack.

What is the difference between roll and Zig Zag cotton wool?
Both are Absorbent Cotton Wool I.P.; the difference is how the cotton is folded. A roll pack is one continuous length that you cut or tear as you need it. A Zig Zag pack is folded like a concertina, so a measured length pulls away cleanly without cutting — quicker on a dressing trolley.
Is the cotton sterilized?
No. Every pack is supplied non-sterile and is marked "to be sterilized before use". That is the usual form for absorbent cotton wool I.P. used in dressing, cleaning and everyday first aid. Sterilize it in your own autoclave if your procedure calls for it.
